Solar Panels Reducing Costs at Gilford Community Church

In 2021, 204 solar panels were installed on the campus of Gilford Community Church (GCC), an installation that has produced 80% of their required electricity and resulted in a 50% decrease in cost. These savings, noted Warren Hutchins, GCC member and project lead, support the church’s broader mission to be a good citizen on the planet and to focus on clean energy for their needs. “This is a very important focus of our congregation,” he added.

This focus includes supporting local nonprofits and people in need. “Reducing expenses enables us to repurpose member pledges from invoices for electricity to support our local community,” said Hutchins, who credited GCC member Al Rollins for continuing to monitor the equipment production.

Noting they continue to review cost/benefit proposals that would increase the production from the equipment by removing sun blocking trees behind the solar panels, Hutchins cited a strong relationship with the Town of Gilford. “All the departments and boards have been very helpful and cooperative as we change and adapt to new needs,” he explained.

These needs, noted GCC Pastor Michael Graham, include strengthening their community. “We share a campus with Gilford Youth Center, and we are both committed as organizations to opening up our campus for community events,” he said. “We are one of the few local facilities groups can turn to when they need a place to meet.”

Gilford Community Church to host ‘Stop the Bleed’

On Wednesday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m., Gilford Community Church (GCC) will host ‘Stop the Bleed,’ a program that teaches people how to intervene in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives. In the program, participants learn to control bleeding in three ways: application of direct pressure, packing a wound, and/or  applying a tourniquet to control bleeding from an extremity.

‘Stop the Bleed’ is a national campaign created by members of the American College of Surgeons in partnership with the National Security Council in 2015. At the present time, more than 3 million people worldwide have been trained to stop bleeding in a severely injured person.

“The rationale behind the training is the awareness that bleeding is the number one preventable cause of death after injury,” said Debra Hastings, recently retired as Director of Nursing Professional Development at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, who suggested the program in Gilford. “Early control of hemorrhage is essential to improve survival.”

Noting most people die from severe bleeding within the first five minutes of an injury, Hastings said the program can save lives. “If people know that the key to saving the life of someone who is bleeding heavily is to use their hands to apply as much pressure as possible to the wound, they can save a person’s life,” she said. “The technique is simple, and it is easily taught…Anyone can be trained to provide immediate, on-site care to prevent death from hemorrhaging.”

‘Stop the Bleed’ will take place on Wednesday, October 25 at 6:00 p.m. at GCC, 19 Potter Hill Rd in Gilford.

In 2022, Gilford Community Church (GCC) awarded $40,000 to local nonprofit organizations through the Daniell Fund, an annual grant-making process that begins again this fall.

Launched in 2022 with a substantial endowment gift made by the late Barbara and Robert Daniell, the Daniell Fund seeks to improve and better the lives of those of low to moderate income in the Lakes Region. Areas of philanthropic interest include, but are not restricted to food insecurity and affordable housing.

“We aspire to be a presence that enriches our community,” explained Jessica Fleck, chair of the Daniell Fund Committee and GCC’s Outreach Committee. “From Matthew 25, we seek to feed the hungry, welcome a stranger, clothe the naked, and care for the sick and imprisoned.”

The Daniell Fund awards grants up to $25,000. Applications for support are due December 15, 2023, while grant recipients will be notified by March. To learn more about the Daniell Fund, including how to apply for support, click here.
