Responsible for the day-to-day activities in the office at Gilford Community Church (GCC), Administrative Assistant Melissa Beale said she has “thoroughly enjoyed [her] first year” and looks forward to many more.

“My favorite part of working here at GCC is being a small part of so many amazing programs that take place here on this campus,” she explained. “Gathering food for holiday baskets or warm items for the homeless, Gilford Got Lunch, Mobile Meals for our Seniors, the Nursery School—the list goes on and on.”

The ability to balance her work life with that of her family has contributed to her positive experience at GCC. “The hours are perfect and allow me to be available for after school activities with my kids,” she said.

Beale has also gleaned unexpected insight into her own history. “I discovered one member, Al Rollins, who has my mom’s maiden name and is actually my eighth cousin,” she said. “Al was able to track our common ancestor back generations to the 1500’s.”

With her grip firmly on the past, Beale said she looks forward to the future at GCC. “I look forward to being a part of this incredible church community for a long time to come,” she said. It is a great place to go to work each day.”

One Community Project Accepting Volunteers for Next Community Project

A joint collaboration between Gilford Community Church (GCC) and Gilford Youth Center (GYC) that began in 2011, One Community Project (OCP) is currently accepting volunteers for its next community project, June 25 to June 28.

Open to adults, children, and youth, OCP projects take place in community settings, including town beaches and fields, homes, and other locations. Types of projects include painting, scraping, landscaping, trash removal, deck repair/replacement, roof repair, window cleaning, mulching, porch repair/replacement, and more.
“OCP is about making a difference in the community,” said Amber McLane, director of GCC’s Children and Youth Program. “Last year, we had more than 40 youth and 10 adults involved in OCP.”

Regarding the project in June, McLane said it will take place at a private residence in Gilford, New Hampshire. “We will be painting, doing landscaping, and general maintenance for a neighbor in need,” she said. “We hope to exceed last year’s participation numbers.”

GCC is also hoping individuals and businesses can help sponsor this year’s OCP event. “There are costs involved, so financial or in-kind support would be terrific and very much appreciated,” added McLane.

To register as a participant or sponsor, contact McLane at gccyouthprogram@gmail.com.

Gilford Community Church's Annual Summer Mission Trip to Take Youth to Tennessee

Every summer, youth from Gilford Community Church (GCC) participate in a Summer Mission Trip, an annual one-week excursion “to make a difference in struggling communities.” “This is a chance for young people to learn more about the world and themselves,” remarked Pastor Michael Graham.

Last year, GCC youth traveled to Pennsylvania to assist families with repairs to their homes among other related tasks. Highlights of the work performed by the youth (and two adult chaperones) included helping a thrift store organize donations, painting, landscaping, building steps, and basic home repairs.

This summer, July 1 - July 9, the destination is Copperhill, Tennessee. AJ Coppola, who also serves as GCC Choir Director, is one of three adult chaperones who will join the youth. Noting he grew up in the church, he said this is his first time going on a Summer Mission Trip as either a participant or chaperone.

“There wasn't as robust a youth program when I was a kid, so I never got to go on a mission trip with GCC,” he said. “I've always loved the videos that they share about their amazing work, so I am very excited this year to join in on the fun…I can't wait.”

GCC’s Annual Summer Mission Trips also provide opportunities for participants to mingle with youth from other churches. “It’s a great opportunity for our kids to learn what might make others different from them, but also similar in many ways, too,” said Graham. “This is a service trip for youth with many different kinds of life lessons.”

According to Judy Cook, who has chaperoned 10 previous Summer Mission Trips, these excursions “put things into perspective” for youth, as she described them as “an experience like no other.” “I’ve seen how it can change people,” she said. “I believe it makes our youth, or any person, a better human being. It’s the work, it’s the trip, it’s the bonding with folks you know and folks you don’t know.”

Coppola said he looks forward to the experience, noting he believes it will be beneficial to [his] soul.” “I’m also excited to get to know more about the amazing youth in our church community,” he added.

GCC Annual Summer Mission Trips are available to youth in the community in addition to those who attend GCC services. Interested youth (or parents) may fill out an inquiry form by clicking here.

Gilford Community Church to Host St. Patrick Day Dinner

On Friday, March 17 at 6 p.m. Gilford Community Church (GCC) will host a St. Patrick’s Day Dinner, which will feature corned beef, cabbage, and all the proverbial fixings followed by dessert (carrot cake).

According to Jim Colburn, who is helping plan the event, GCC’s first St. Patrick's Day Dinner took place in the early 1980's as a fundraiser. “Reverend Ray Wixson organized the first dinners,” he said. “My wife, Anne, said that Reverend Wixson got her involved better than 30 years ago by asking her to make a carrot cake.”

More recently, the hospitality committee, led by Eloise Post, has hosted the dinner. “It ran pretty much annually since then until Covid hit,” said Colburn, who said the event was the last church event held prior to the quarantine in 2020 due to Covid. “It’s nice to see the return of a tradition in the church—and it's always good to break bread with friends.”

‘Breaking bread’ requires volunteers, however, an opportunity GCC Pastor Michael Graham said is open to the public. “We are looking for carrot cake and bread bakers in addition to people helping us with kitchen prep the day before the event,” he said. “Your payment will be some terrific food and great company.”

Available for purchase through Friday, March 10, tickets are $23 per person and may be purchased at the GCC office, 19 Potter Hill Rd., Gilford, or by emailing Diane Lyons at dlyons0710@gmail.com. To learn more about volunteering for the event, email Lyons or contact the GCC office at 603-524-6057.
