Gilford Community Church (GCC) recently awarded $15,000 to New Beginnings – Without Violence & Abuse and $5,000 to Laconia Wellness Center, gifts made possible from a donor who wished to remain anonymous. “The donor wanted the money to go to organizations making a difference in the community,” explained GCC Pastor Michael Graham. “The Church Council convened, deliberated on community needs, and decided which organizations would receive the funds.”

The mission of New Beginnings is to end sexual, domestic, and stalking violence, while Laconia Wellness Center provides a gym where seniors can exercise in a medically supervised environment. Both missions, according to Graham, resonated with the Council. “We do not make these decisions lightly,” he said. “We seek feedback from our church members and the community, and we conduct our due diligence before making a decision like this…We are so grateful we can serve the community in this way.”

Richard (Dick) DeVivo, vice chair of the Community Wellness Center, said they are grateful, too, for “the generous financial support from the Gilford Community Church.” “This donation from the Gilford Community Church will assist us in perpetuating our mission,” he said. “The CWC is 25 years old, and new members are welcome to join this socially and physically active group of seniors.”

In looking ahead to the future, Graham said GCC is committed to achieving its philanthropic goals. “Whether through scholarships of students entering college or grants to local nonprofits, giving back is a crucial part of our mission as a church,” he said. “By reaching out to the community, we are also inviting people in.”

Local Youth To Embark on ‘Mission” to Help Others

Since 2007, more than 100 youth have participated in Summer Mission Trips organized by Gilford Community Church (GCC), an experience Pastor Michael Graham referred to as “transformative.” “This is a chance for youth to make a difference in struggling communities,” he said. “I think what they discover, too, is that these trips change the way they view and care about the world — it’s amazing to see.”

This year, GCC’s Summer Mission Trip, which takes place in late July, will take youth to Blue Knob, PA where they will assist families with repairs to their homes. Anticipated projects include painting, home repair, roofing and building wheelchair ramps.

In addition to work, GCC Youth Director Scott Hodsdon said there is time for the youth to have fun. “Our check-in day is July 24, but we will leave a couple days early so we can camp, do some shopping, and share some bonding time before we get to work,” he said. “In total, we will work 8 hours a day for four days, so we expect to accomplish a lot.”

This year’s GCC Summer Mission Trip is particularly meaningful, according to Hodsdon, as Blue Knob, Pa is the site of a past mission. He said this year is also the first time since 2019 they have been able to organize a Summer Mission Trip due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  “We are grateful we can host this trip, this year,” he added. “As a church, it’s so important we create opportunities for young people to experience for themselves the sense of care and compassion we discuss in sermons and our programs.”

While newcomers to the Lakes Region may be surprised, locals and returning seasonal visitors have come to expect big names at Gilford Community Church’s popular Summer Music Series. “Our Sunday services in the summer feature short sermons and a lot of music,” said Pastor Michael Graham. “We feel very strongly that music can inspire the soul.”

In July, this feeling takes shape with some of the most popular and well known musicians expected to perform during Sunday service at Gilford Community Church (GCC). Violinist Sasha Callahan and cellist Leo Eguchi perform on July 10; Belle Tones and Chris Tompkins with Cindie Graham perform on July 17; flutist Mary Kay Robinson performs on July 24; and singer, guitarist, and band leader Paul Warnick performs on July 31.

GCC’s Summer Music Series continues weekly every Sunday through September 4. Featuring all musical styles from classical to contemporary, performances take place during Sunday services, which begin at 10 a.m. In addition to strong natural acoustics due to the shape of the sanctuary, GCC features a state-of-the-art sound system.
