Gilford Community Church (GCC) recently awarded five $5,000 scholarships to graduating seniors. Made possible through GCC’s Scholarship Fund, the selection committee acts on behalf of the Daniell Family Foundation in reviewing and distributing annual education grants to Gilford area students.

“This fund was originally established in 1996 as the Helping Hand Scholarship by the Reverend Raymond C. Wixson and Barbara and Robert Daniell,” explained Pastor Michael Graham. “All committee members truly enjoy this opportunity to see the accomplishments of high school graduates, learn their future plans, and play a small part in assisting the Daniell Family Foundation to help them realize those plans.”

The names of the students who received the scholarship and their chosen colleges include: Hale Kutuk: Simmons University, Boston, MA; Shealagh Brown: University of Vermont, Burlington, VT; Reece Anna Sadler: Bentley University, Waltham, MA; Mackenzie Roys: Plymouth State University, Plymouth, NH; and Riley Marsh: Plymouth State University, Plymouth, NH.

“Receiving this scholarship will help me further my education at Plymouth State University so I may become a math teacher and share my passions and love of math with students,” said Scholarship recipient Roys.

For Roys, the scholarship award was particularly meaningful, as she cited he has been part of GCC since “[she] was born.” “My church family has given me the strength, drive, and foundation to push through hardships and reach my goal of educating younger generations so they may do even more incredible things than myself,” she said.

Commenting on the nature of the Scholarship Fund itself, Graham said the committee considers applicants from both inside and outside the church. “This is a community fund open to young people from our congregation or who attend Gilford High School,” he said. “We are so grateful for the opportunity to invest in young people in furthering their educational goals.”

Located in Gilford, NH, GCC is an inclusive, open community with a broadly ecumenical spirit that welcomes people from all denominational and cultural backgrounds. Viewable live on YouTube, services take place at 10 a.m. on Sundays at 19 Potter Hill Rd., Gilford, NH.

On Sunday, June 12 as part of its regular Sunday service at 10 a.m., Gilford Community Church (GCC) will host the first performance of its Summer Music Series with musicians Michael Wernig and Chris Tompkins.

A recent graduate of UNH, Wernig currently works at Newmarket Parks and Recreation and offers private piano lessons. Performing at GCC since he was a young adult, Tompkins has stayed at Lake Shore Park in Gilford for the summer for more than 55 years. During Sunday’s service, Werning will play My Romance and Rhapsody in Blue, while Tompkins will sing gospel and also sing a duet, “There Was Jesus,” with Cindie Graham.

“We are thrilled to welcome both musicians here to kick off our Summer Music Series,” said Pastor Michael Graham, who noted that GCC’s Sunday services in the summer are “full of music.” “Our services, especially in the summer, feature beautiful, live music and sermons meant to inspire people to think critically and with their hearts…I do not preach dogma.”

GCC’s Summer Music Series continues weekly every Sunday through September 4. Featuring all musical styles from classical to contemporary, performances take place during Sunday services, which begin at 10 a.m.

For those unfamiliar with GCC and its popularity as a music venue, Graham said visitors are “in for a treat.” “We don’t want to be a secret,” he said. “We have a beautiful state of the art system and incredible acoustics here. If you have not visited us, please do – you will be surprised at what you hear.”

Gilford Community Church Invests in Community through Diaconate Fund

Gilford Community Church (GCC) has awarded $2,700 to the Town of Gilford to support recycling and $2,000 to start a mentor program for recently released individuals from Belknap County Department of Corrections. The awards were made possible through GCC’s Diaconate Fund.

“Diaconate funds are typically used to help individuals in emergency circumstances,” said Stacey Pate, chair of GCC’s Diaconate Committee. “However, we felt that these two projects were important not only on an individual basis but community wide, and were a good use of our resources.”

Scott Dunn, town administrator for the Town of Gilford, said they are "extremely grateful and appreciative for the generous donation.” “Over the years, the town and GCC have forged a wonderful partnership and their most recent unsolicited donation is a testament to their commitment to the Gilford community.”

The investment in the town’s recycling program, according to GCC Pastor Michael Graham, will enable the town to complete needed electrical work. “We are happy we could provide them with the boost they needed to complete an important project that helps to reduce the town’s carbon footprint.”

Regarding GCC’s choice to invest in Belknap County Department of Corrections, GCC Community Outreach Committee Chairperson Jessica Fleck expressed enthusiasm for their new mentor program. “This is a program that will match community mentors with folks reentering their communities,” she said. “Our support will help with expenses, such as rides to work, laundry, cell phones needed to maintain employment, and small household items. Our investment will also help defray training costs for the mentors.”

In looking ahead to future investments in the community, Graham said GCC’s investment philosophy is as open as its inclusive membership. “We support and welcome people from all denominational and cultural backgrounds,” he added.
