Youth Confirmation Visit B'nai Israel in Laconia

Earlier this fall, youth in Gilford Community Church’s Confirmation class visited B'nai Israel in Laconia. “This was an opportunity for the Gilford Community Church Confirmation class and mentors to speak directly with the Rabbi, learn traditions, and ask questions,” said Amber McLane, Director of Children and Youth Programs. “It was a positive experience, and we hope to continue our visitations in the future.”

Confirmation student Bella Bryant agreed and said they met with Rabbi Jan Katz before service. “With her knowledge, she was able to explain and teach us about the Jewish religion,” she said. “It was interesting to learn about the temple, Torah, and several of their traditions.”

The visit also presented the class with “real insight” into the seriousness of current world events. “There was increased security during the service, which was eye-opening for our confirmation class and mentors,” explained McLane. Such an experience, however, supported the church’s Confirmation class philosophy. “It’s important to expose our young adults to different religions through educational experiences,” added McLane.

Such exposure, according to Michael Graham, pastor at Gilford Community Church, is “crucial” today. “There is significant conflict both abroad and here in our very communities,” he remarked. “If we can help young people learn about the perspectives of others, I believe we help them more meaningfully appreciate the diversity of human experience.”

Located in Gilford at 19 Potter Hill Rd, Gilford Community Church (GCC) is an inclusive, open community that welcomes believers and doubters, seekers and skeptics, young and old. Viewable live on YouTube, Sunday service takes place at 10 a.m. at 19 Potter Hill Rd., Gilford, NH and is also available on a livestream feed on GCC’s  Facebook page.
